The Weaver
Woven in the High Atlas, Azilal province, where the weaving tradition has been transmitted from mother to daughter for generations without external influence. The Azilal weaver does not follow a fixed pattern — she composes on the loom as she goes, deciding on colour, motif, and placement in real time. Tafsut is the product of that freedom: a rug that records both a tradition and the individuality of its weaver. The scattered confetti across the ivory ground is not a convention. It is a signature.
Why We Chose This Rug
Among dozens of Azilal rugs, this one stood apart immediately. Not because it is more colourful — but because of the unusual balance between geometry and spontaneity. The large suspended lozenges create a strong architectural rhythm, while the scattered bursts of colour prevent the composition from ever becoming rigid. It is a rug that feels simultaneously composed and joyful.
Collector’s Note
We selected Tafsut for the quality of its restraint. In a tradition known for vivid colour, this weaver chose to keep the ground open — to let the ivory breathe, to let the colour arrive as punctuation rather than saturation. Silence is often more difficult to compose than colour. The result is a rug that is simultaneously bold and light: the fuchsia lozenge commands the room, but the ivory ground keeps it from overwhelming it. It is a difficult balance to achieve. This weaver achieved it.
