Reading the Weave — Tafsut

Reading the Weave — High Atlas / Azilal

Tafsut — The Spring

A curatorial reading of an Azilal rug from the High Atlas, Azilal Province.

There are rugs that are composed. And there are rugs that seem to bloom inside a room.

Tafsut belongs to the second kind.

Its ivory ground is not a background. It is a field. And across that field, colour has been scattered the way spring scatters itself across the Atlas: without plan, without symmetry, without apology.

A Note on Method

How we read this rug

What we know: This rug was hand-knotted in the Azilal Province of the High Atlas, Morocco, in a tradition transmitted from mother to daughter for generations. The Azilal weaver does not follow a fixed pattern — she composes on the loom as she goes, deciding on colour, motif and placement in real time.

What we see: An ivory field scattered with multicolour knots. Large outlined lozenges creating an invisible vertical axis. A fuchsia lozenge at the centre. No border, no hierarchy, no single point of arrival. A composition that is simultaneously structured and free.

How we read it: Not as a collection of symbols with fixed meanings, but as a personal composition written in a living visual language. The weaver did not transcribe a tradition. She spoke it — in the colours of spring.

The Three Readings

∿∿∿

PRIMARY READING — IZRI

The Continuity

The scattered multicolour knots create a visual rhythm that moves across the entire field — no centre, no border, no hierarchy. The eye travels continuously, finding no place to rest and no reason to stop.

We use the idea of izri here as a curatorial reading of the way the eye moves from one motif to the next — each element calling for the next, the composition never concluding, only continuing. In Tamazight, an izri is a verse that calls for a response. This rug is that verse.

SECONDARY READING — AFRAG

The Structure

Beneath the apparent freedom of the composition, a clear vertical axis organises the central lozenges. The structure is present — it simply does not announce itself. The large outlined lozenges create an invisible architecture that holds the scattered colour in place.

Afrag reads the rug as inhabited space: the lozenges define interior and exterior, threshold and territory. The scattered knots are not random — they populate a space that the structure has already defined. Freedom and order are not opposites here. They are collaborators.

TERTIARY READING — ASIF

The Flow

The movement of colour across the ivory ground has the quality of water finding its own path — not directed, not contained, but not random either. It flows. The fuchsia lozenge at the centre is not a destination — it is a moment in a movement that began before it and continues after it.

A river is not defined by its water. It is defined by the path that remains after the water has passed. Tafsut is that path.
