Wool has been central to Amazigh material culture for at least three thousand years. The sheep of the Atlas Mountains were domesticated in the Neolithic period, and the weaving of wool into textiles — rugs, blankets, tent panels, clothing — has been a continuous practice in the Amazigh world since at least the first millennium BCE. The geometric vocabulary of Amazigh weaving is among the oldest continuous visual traditions in North Africa.

Part II — The Sheep of the Atlas Mountains

What breeds of sheep produce Moroccan rug wool?
The primary breeds used in Moroccan rug production are the Timahdite and the Beni Guil — both mountain breeds shaped by altitude and cold. The Timahdite is the dominant breed of the Middle Atlas, producing the dense, high-lanolin fleece characteristic of Beni Ourain and Beni M'Guild rugs. The Beni Guil is the primary breed of the eastern High Atlas and the pre-Saharan plateaux, producing a finer, slightly longer fibre used in kilim and flatwoven production.

The sheep of the Atlas Mountains are not the same as the commercially farmed breeds of lowland Morocco or the industrial wool-producing breeds of Australia and New Zealand. The Beni Guil. The primary breed of the eastern High Atlas and the Hauts Plateaux of eastern Morocco, the Beni Guil produces a finer, slightly longer fibre than the Timahdite. It is used primarily in kilim and flatwoven production, where the fineness of the fibre allows for greater detail in the woven pattern. The Beni Guil is also used in some Azilal rug production, where its slightly longer staple length contributes to the characteristic texture of the pile.

The D'man. A smaller breed from the southern oases and pre-Saharan regions, the D'man produces a fine, soft wool used in some southern Moroccan textile traditions. It is less commonly used in pile rug production but appears in some flatwoven and embroidered textiles from the Anti-Atlas and Draa Valley regions.

The altitude at which the sheep graze is the single most important factor in wool quality. Above 1,500 metres, the cold forces the animal to produce a denser, heavier fleece with a significantly higher lanolin content. Part III — From Sheep to Rug: The Complete Process

How is Moroccan rug wool processed?
The processing of authentic Moroccan rug wool is entirely manual — from shearing to spinning. The fleece is hand-sheared in spring, hand-washed in cold mountain water, hand-carded to align the fibres, and hand-spun on a drop spindle to produce a yarn of natural irregularity. No industrial machinery is used at any stage. The entire process, from raw fleece to finished yarn, takes several days for a quantity sufficient for one rug.

Step 1 — Shearing

The sheep are sheared once a year, in spring — typically between March and May, depending on altitude and the timing of the seasonal migration to high pastures. Shearing is done by hand with traditional scissors or shears, not with electric clippers. The fleece is removed in a single piece where possible, to preserve the staple length and the natural structure of the fibre.

The timing of the shearing is critical. Too early, and the fleece has not reached its full density for the winter. Too late, and the sheep begin to shed naturally, reducing the quality of the clip. The experienced shearer reads the animal and the season — a knowledge that is transmitted through generations of pastoral practice.

Step 2 — Sorting and Skirting

After shearing, the fleece is sorted by quality. The finest wool — from the shoulders and sides of the animal — is separated from the coarser wool of the legs and belly. The edges of the fleece, which are typically stained or matted, are removed. This process — called skirting — ensures that only the highest-quality fibre enters the production process.

Step 3 — Washing

The sorted fleece is washed in cold mountain water — not in hot water, which would felt the fibres and strip the lanolin. The washing removes dirt, vegetable matter, and excess lanolin, while preserving the natural wax content that gives the wool its characteristic feel. In traditional practice, the fleece is washed in a running stream, weighted with stones to keep it submerged, and left for several hours before being lifted out and dried in the sun.

This cold-water washing process is one of the most important distinctions between authentic Moroccan wool and industrially processed wool. Industrial processing uses hot water and detergents that strip the lanolin completely, producing a uniform, clean fibre that has lost the natural properties that make wool exceptional. The slight waxy quality of authentic Moroccan rug wool — the quality that makes it feel warm to the touch and naturally water-resistant — is the direct result of this traditional washing process.

Step 4 — Carding

After washing and drying, the fleece is carded — combed with hand cards (flat paddles set with wire teeth) to align the fibres and remove any remaining vegetable matter. Carding produces a rolag — a soft, cylindrical bundle of aligned fibres — ready for spinning. The quality of the carding determines the evenness of the yarn: well-carded wool produces a smooth, consistent yarn; poorly carded wool produces a lumpy, uneven yarn that will create irregularities in the pile.

Step 5 — Spinning

The carded wool is spun on a drop spindle — a simple tool consisting of a weighted disc (the whorl) and a shaft, which is set spinning and allowed to drop, drawing the fibres into a continuous yarn as it falls. Drop spindle spinning is slower than wheel spinning, but it produces a yarn of natural irregularity — a slight variation in thickness and twist that is the source of the pile's characteristic texture.

This irregularity is not a defect. It is the quality that distinguishes hand-spun yarn from machine-spun yarn, and it is visible in the finished rug as a subtle variation in the way the pile catches light — the quality that makes an authentic Moroccan rug look different from every angle.

Step 6 — Dyeing

The spun yarn is dyed before weaving — either in the natural undyed state (as in Beni Ourain rugs) or with natural or synthetic dyes. Natural dyeing is a complex process that requires mordanting — treating the fibre with a mineral salt (alum, iron, or copper) to fix the dye — before immersing it in the dye bath. The mordant determines not only the fastness of the dye but also its final colour: the same dye plant will produce different colours depending on the mordant used.

The principal natural dye plants used in Moroccan wool dyeing are madder (for reds and oranges), indigo (for blues), saffron (for yellows and golds), henna (for warm oranges), pomegranate rind (for warm browns and yellows), walnut shell (for dark browns and blacks), and oak gall (for blacks and dark greys). Each plant requires a specific preparation and a specific mordant to produce its characteristic colour.

Part IV — A Material from the High Atlas

The finest Moroccan wool comes from sheep raised on the high pastures of the Atlas Mountains — breeds whose fleece is shaped by altitude, snowmelt water, and sparse highland vegetation. The result is a silky, lustrous wool with long, fine fibers. Only white wool is used for weaving; the rarer black wool, more resistant, is reserved for tents and clothing.


Part V — Preparation — Washing, Spinning, Dyeing

The preparation of wool is a long and deliberate process: washing, carding and combing to separate long fibers from short, spinning to produce strong weft yarns and softer pile yarns, and finally dyeing. Until recently — and still today in the finest workshops — dyeing was done entirely from vegetable sources: madder root for red, pomegranate bark for beige-yellow, saffron for light gold, indigo for deep blue, henna for brown. Dyes of the same intensity combine harmoniously, never garish, always grounded in the landscape they come from.


Part VI — Weaving — A Grammar of Symbols

Carpet making begins on simple vertical looms — wooden beams, reed stems, rope — easy to set up and transport, unchanged for generations. The patterns are not decorative choices. They are a language. Each geometric motif carries meaning rooted in Amazigh belief: the large rhombus deflects the evil eye; the wheat grain symbolises fertility; the partridge's eye is a mark of beauty. Part VII — Natural Wool vs Synthetic Fibres

How do I tell if a Moroccan rug is made from natural wool?
Press your palm flat into the pile and hold it for three seconds. Natural high-lanolin wool will feel warm — almost body-temperature — within seconds. Synthetic fibres stay cool. The smell test also works: natural wool has a faint, warm, animal smell. Synthetic fibres are odourless. Under different light sources, natural wool shifts subtly in colour and texture. Synthetic fibres look identical under any light.

The Moroccan rug market contains a wide range of fibre qualities — from authentic hand-spun natural wool to machine-spun synthetic fibres sold under the same name. Understanding the difference is essential for any serious buyer.

The hand test

Press your palm flat into the pile and hold it for three seconds. Natural wool — particularly high-lanolin Atlas mountain wool — will feel warm within seconds. The lanolin conducts body heat back to the hand. Synthetic fibres (acrylic, polyester, viscose) stay cool regardless of how long you hold them. This is the fastest and most reliable non-destructive test available.

The smell test

Natural wool has a faint, warm, animal smell — particularly noticeable in a new rug or after the rug has been in a warm room. It is not unpleasant; it is the smell of lanolin and natural fibre. Synthetic fibres are odourless, or have a faint chemical smell. If a rug smells of nothing, or of chemicals, it is almost certainly synthetic.

The burn test

Pull a single fibre from the pile and hold it to a flame. Natural wool burns slowly, chars, and self-extinguishes when the flame is removed. It smells of burning hair. Synthetic fibres melt, drip, and continue burning after the flame is removed. They smell of burning plastic. This test is destructive — use it only on a fibre pulled from an inconspicuous area.

The light test

Take the rug to a window and observe the pile in natural daylight, then look at it under artificial light. Natural wool shifts subtly between warm and cool light — it has depth and variation. Synthetic fibres look identical under any light source. This test is particularly useful for evaluating dye quality: naturally dyed wool shifts in different light; synthetically dyed wool does not.

Is the wool the same in all Moroccan rugs?
No — the wool varies significantly between traditions, reflecting the different breeds, altitudes, and processing methods of each region. Beni Ourain wool is the densest and highest in lanolin — a product of the extreme altitude of the Middle Atlas. Azilal wool is slightly finer, from the High Atlas. Kilim wool is the finest — spun to a tighter twist for flatwoven production. Each tradition's wool is optimised for its specific weaving technique.

Beni Ourain. The wool of the Beni Ourain tradition is the benchmark for Moroccan rug wool quality. Produced by Timahdite sheep grazing at 1,500 to 2,500 metres in the Middle Atlas, it has the highest lanolin content of any Moroccan rug wool. It is hand-spun to a medium twist — loose enough to produce a soft, deep pile, tight enough to hold the knot structure. It is never dyed — the natural ivory colour of the fleece is the ground of every authentic Beni Ourain rug.

Azilal. The wool of the Azilal tradition comes from High Atlas sheep grazing at 1,800 to 3,000 metres — the highest altitude of any Moroccan rug tradition. It is slightly finer than Beni Ourain wool, with a longer staple length that contributes to the characteristic texture of the Azilal pile. It is dyed — with natural plant dyes in traditional production, with synthetic dyes in contemporary commercial production.

Beni M'Guild. The wool of the Beni M'Guild tradition is similar to Beni Ourain wool in density and lanolin content — both come from the Middle Atlas. The key difference is in the dyeing: Beni M'Guild wool is dyed in deep reds, burgundies, and dark blues using natural dyes (madder, indigo) in traditional production. Boujad. The wool of the Boujad tradition comes from the Chaouia-Tadla plain — lower altitude, warmer climate, less extreme conditions than the Atlas traditions. The wool is less dense and lower in lanolin than Middle or High Atlas wool. It is typically dyed with synthetic dyes in contemporary production, which contributes to the vivid, sometimes garish palette of commercial Boujad rugs. Traditional pieces use natural dyes.

Kilim. Kilim wool is spun to a tighter twist than pile rug wool — the tighter twist produces a stronger, more durable yarn that can withstand the tension of flatwoven production without breaking.
