No line is perfectly straight. No square is truly identical. Precision gives way to rhythm. Geometry becomes something unmistakably human.
The Tissit
In Tamazight, tissit is the act of weaving itself — not the object produced, but the gesture that produces it. The process. The decision repeated thousands of times until a surface emerges.
This rug makes that process visible. The grid is not a pattern applied to the wool. It is the wool. The weave is the motif. There is nothing behind it, nothing beneath it. What you see is what was made — line by line, knot by knot, without a template, without a ruler, without a drawing pinned to the wall.
What appears to be a grid is, in reality, the record of thousands of gestures.
The Rug
Handwoven in the Middle Atlas in the Beni Ourain tradition, by Amazigh weavers working on traditional vertical looms. The wool is natural, undyed ivory — local sheep raised on high-altitude pastures, producing a fleece of exceptional density and lanolin content. The black is worked in naturally dyed wool. The pile depth — 4 to 6 cm — gives the surface a physical weight and warmth that photographs cannot fully convey.
The grid is not perfectly regular. Each line deviates slightly from the last — breathing, finding its axis, losing it, finding it again. This is not imprecision. It is the visible trace of the weaver’s hand. A machine would produce a perfect grid. This rug produces something more interesting.

Why We Chose This Rug
Among the many two-colour Beni Ourain rugs produced in the Middle Atlas, this one stood apart immediately — not for what it adds, but for what it removes. The composition is stripped to its absolute minimum: two colours, one motif, infinite repetition. And yet it is never monotonous. At close range, each cell is slightly different from its neighbours. At distance, the composition reads as a single, powerful architectural statement.
Symbolism
Tissit — The Weave
- The grid can be read as a map of inhabited space — each cell a room, each line a threshold, each intersection a decision
- The slight irregularity of the lines is the visible trace of the weaver’s hand — the mark that distinguishes a made object from a manufactured one
- The two-colour palette — undyed ivory and deep black — is the most ancestral vocabulary of Amazigh weaving: the natural fleece of the sheep, the darkest available dye
- The repetition of the motif across the entire surface can be read as a form of meditative discipline — the same gesture, thousands of times, each time slightly different
