Others cross them. Some hold their direction; others change it without warning. Small signs appear at the edges of these movements, like traces of presence across an otherwise open territory. There is no map to follow here. Only movement.

The eye enters the composition without knowing where it will emerge.

Tizi — The Passage

In Tamazight, tizi is the mountain pass — the opening between two places, the passage that allows one landscape to become connected to another. Not the destination. Not the road. The threshold between.

This rug can be read in much the same way. Its lines create passages rather than borders. They divide space, reconnect it, disappear and return. The eye is never given a single route. It has to choose. One line leads to another. A crossing becomes a turn. A dead end becomes an opening.

The rug is not asking us to identify what each line represents. It is asking us to follow.

The Rug

Hand-knotted in the Middle Atlas, Morocco, by an artisan who works without a pattern — the composition emerges from the weaving itself, one line at a time. The long organic lines that cross the ivory ground were not drawn first on paper. They emerged from the loom, guided by instinct and decades of practice.

In the upper part of the composition, the forms are vertical and relatively contained. Then, progressively, the lines begin to liberate themselves — bifurcating, crossing, meeting, occupying space. The lower part becomes almost a network. The composition is not static. It moves.

100% natural wool. Multicolour — black, yellow, pink, teal, terracotta — on natural ivory. 200 × 300 cm. One of a kind.

Why We Chose This Rug

Most rugs begin with a pattern. A grid. A plan. A set of symbols to be reproduced row by row, knot by knot, until the composition is complete. This one did not. The artisan who wove Tizi works differently — she begins with a line, follows it, and lets the composition find itself.

The result is a piece that cannot be repeated. The exact placement of every line, every contour form, every cluster of marks — these are the decisions of a single hand on a single day. It belongs on a floor the way a painting belongs on a wall.

Symbolism

Tizi — The Passage

The lines do not describe a place — they suggest movement through one: rising, bifurcating, crossing, disappearing, reappearing elsewhere

The ivory ground is not a background — it is the open territory through which the lines move, the space that makes passage possible

The small signs at the edges of the lines can be read as traces of presence — marks left by movement rather than symbols with fixed meanings

The progression from contained vertical forms at the top to a liberated network at the bottom mirrors the experience of crossing a mountain pass: constraint giving way to openness

Read the Weave

Every Amazigh rug can be admired.
