Across 6 square metres of ivory wool, hundreds of Amazigh symbols scatter freely — diamonds, crosses, combs, zigzags, eyes. No two are placed the same way twice. No line of text, no margin, no silence. Every centimetre carries a mark.

Tirra — The Writings

Tirra (ⵜⵉⵔⵔⴰ) means “the writings” or “the inscriptions” in Tamazight. It evokes the written word itself, and naturally recalls Tifinagh — the ancient Amazigh script, one of the world’s oldest indigenous writing traditions still in use today.

In many Amazigh traditions, these symbols were not merely decorative. They were protective, communicative, commemorative — a visual language passed from mother to daughter through weaving, tattooing and pottery, long before any school taught them to write.

Like an ancient manuscript, this rug gathers signs instead of sentences. It accumulates symbols the way a manuscript accumulates words.

Long before Amazigh stories were printed, they were woven.

The Rug

Handwoven in the Azilal province, high in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, Tirra is woven knot by knot by a single Amazigh artisan. Its expansive 200 × 300 cm field allows every sign to breathe, turning the floor into something closer to a manuscript than a decorative object.
