Izri — The Unbroken Line

In Amazigh oral tradition, an izri (ⵉⵣⵔⵉ) is a short poetic form — one verse calling for another, each line echoing the next. No izri stands alone. The form is built on continuation: what begins must be answered.

This rug is built the same way. The lozenge grid crosses the ivory field, enters the cobalt without pause, and emerges again into ivory below — as if the blue were simply a passage, and the line were something that predates colour itself.

The Rug

Hand-knotted in the High Atlas, Morocco, in the Beni Ourain tradition. The composition: three horizontal fields — ivory, cobalt, ivory — traversed by a continuous grid of large lozenges in fine dark lines. The cobalt — deep, saturated, close to Klein, close to Majorelle, close to the sky above the Atlas at dusk — occupies the heart of the composition. Natural ivory wool fringe finishes the lower edge.
