Izri — The Unbroken Line

In Amazigh oral tradition, an izri (ⵉⵣⵔⵉ) is a short poetic form — one verse calling for another, each line echoing the next. No izri stands alone. The form is built on continuation: what begins must be answered.

This rug is built the same way. The lozenge grid crosses the ivory field, enters the cobalt without pause, and emerges again into ivory below — as if the blue were simply a passage, and the line was something that predates colour itself.

The colour changes. The path does not.

The Rug

Hand-knotted in the High Atlas, Morocco, in the Beni Ourain tradition. Three horizontal fields — ivory, cobalt, ivory — traversed by a continuous grid of large lozenges in fine dark lines. The cobalt — deep, saturated, close to Klein, close to Majorelle, close to the sky above the Atlas at dusk — occupies the heart of the composition.

The regularity of the lozenge grid across the colour change is not accidental. It is the mark of mastery. And yet the lines are not mechanically perfect — they breathe slightly. A knot placed fractionally off-centre. A line that widens by a thread. These micro-variations are not imperfections. They are the record of a hand at work.

Why We Chose This Rug

We selected Izri because it holds two contradictory qualities simultaneously. It is bold — the cobalt commands the room. And it is quiet — the line asks to be followed slowly, carefully, all the way to the end. It is one of the most visually resolved pieces in our collection. The kind of rug that looks inevitable — as if it could not have been made any other way.
