There is something unusual about this rug.

At first glance, it appears perfectly balanced. Four large cross-shaped medallions, ivory on ivory, outlined in black and acid yellow. A composition of rare restraint.

Only after a moment does the eye notice it.

A single black point. Small. Silent. Placed at the heart of one of the four medallions.

Once seen, it cannot be unseen.

The Beauty Mark

In many Amazigh traditions across North Africa, the beauty mark — called azel in Tamazight, shama (شامة) in the Maghrebi vernacular — has long been associated with beauty, protection and blessing.

Often regarded as a protection against the evil eye, it was believed to work by catching the first envious gaze — absorbing it, deflecting it, before it could reach what matters.

So valued was this mark that Amazigh women who did not possess one naturally would simulate it with harqûs — a black paste of oak gall and cloves — placed at the corner of the mouth or on the cheekbone. Or they would tattoo it permanently, a small point anchored at the end of a geometric motif, a lifelong shield.

In the poetry of the Atlas mountains, the beauty mark is described as a black seed pressed into pale earth. A symbol of fertility. Of the feminine matrix. Of the continuity of life.

It is the same point that appears at the centre of the Amazigh lozenge — woven into handmade Moroccan rugs, stamped into pottery, tattooed into skin for centuries. The origin point. The protected core.

Rather than correcting it, the weaver allowed it to remain.

The Rug

Hand-knotted in Azilal, in the High Atlas mountains of Morocco, by a single artisan working on a horizontal ground loom. The wool is natural, hand-spun from local sheep, retaining the slight irregularities of the fleece that give the pile its depth and warmth.

The palette — natural ivory, deep black, acid yellow — is a conversation between the ancestral and the present. The Moroccan weaving tradition, reinterpreted with a contemporary eye.

This is a one-of-a-kind Moroccan rug. It will not be woven again.
