Afrag — The Enclosure | Handwoven Moroccan Wool Rug | Ivory & Cobalt | 200 × 300 cm
- $1450
- $1250.00
Some rugs are patterns. This one is architecture.
A cobalt blue flatweave base. An ivory hand-knotted grid emerging from the surface in quiet relief. Nested squares and rectangles, each frame containing the next, each boundary creating a new interior. The eye enters. Then enters again.
Afrag — The Enclosure
Afrag (ⴰⴼⵔⴰⴳ) means the enclosure, the boundary that creates shelter. In Amazigh tradition, the afrag is not merely a physical structure — it is the gesture of protection itself. The act of drawing a line between outside and inside, between exposure and shelter, between the world and the home.
Afrag (ⴰⴼⵔⴰⴳ) is the line that turns open land into home.
The Rug
Woven in Marrakech in a rare mixed technique: a deep cobalt blue flatweave base from which an ivory hand-knotted grid emerges in quiet relief. The contrast between natural ivory and deep cobalt gives the composition the clarity of an architectural drawing.
100% natural wool, hand-shorn. No synthetic fibres. No machine production. Minor variations in pile density and pattern spacing are the mark of the hand, not a defect.
One of a kind. It will not be woven again.
Symbolism
Afrag — The Enclosure
- The nested square is a recurring motif in Amazigh textiles, often interpreted as a symbol of enclosure, continuity and protection
- Each concentric frame can be read as a layer of shelter — the further inward, the more protected
- The cobalt blue is commonly associated in North African traditions with spiritual clarity and protection against misfortune
- The grid recalls the plan of the Moroccan riad — rooms arranged around a central void, light descending from above
- In Amazigh architecture, the agadir — the collective granary — was built on the same principle: walls within walls, each protecting what mattered most
