Some rugs furnish a room. Others establish it.

Adrar belongs to the second kind. Its monumental central lozenge, woven entirely in the natural brown of Atlas wool, does not merely occupy the field. It anchors it. Like a mountain, everything else takes its measure from it.

The Adrar

In many Amazigh traditions, adrar — the mountain — is not simply a geographic feature. It is a presence. A fixed point around which the world orients itself. The great central lozenge of this rug carries that quality: it does not float on the ivory ground — it anchors it. The flanking triangles, the lateral chain of smaller lozenges, the negative-space diamonds within the central form — all derive their balance from the same centre.

The Rug

Handwoven in a small Amazigh village in the High Atlas, around seventy kilometres from Azilal, where weaving remains part of everyday domestic life. Unlike the vividly coloured Azilal rugs for which the region is often known, this piece embraces the quiet strength of undyed wool. Ivory and deep brown come directly from the fleece itself, revealing the landscape through material rather than colour.

The pile is deep and dense. Every shade comes directly from the fleece itself. The abrash across the brown field — shifting from chocolate to caramel to warm taupe — is the record of different animals, different seasons, different hands. 242 × 183 cm.

Symbolism

Adrar — The Mountain

  • The central lozenge, in many Amazigh traditions, carries the symbolic weight of protection and the feminine principle — here deployed at monumental scale, filling the field with a presence that is architectural rather than decorative
  • The negative-space diamonds within the lozenge can be read as the eye — a protective form present in Amazigh tattoo and textile traditions across the Atlas
  • Within this reading, the flanking triangles evoke mountain peaks — echoing the High Atlas landscape where the rug was woven
  • The lateral chain of lozenges can be read as continuity — the unbroken visual rhythm that holds the composition together across its full length

Reading the Weave

Curatorial Reading

This rug can also be approached through Reading the Weave — Moroccan Corridor's curatorial method for reading Amazigh compositions.

Primary reading: Afrag — The Structure
The composition is organised around a clear vertical axis — summit, centre, base, lateral pillars. The rug reads as architecture before it reads as ornament.

Secondary reading: Izri — The Continuity
The lateral chain of lozenges creates an uninterrupted visual rhythm that frames and contains the central composition.
